Important Dates
There is at least one bank holiday every month, some religious and others political. Almost every bank and shop outside of the biggest cities closes on these national holidays and they are a chance for the family to get together.
January 1 – Año Nuevo New Year
April 2 – Día de las Malvinas Veterans' Day in memory of the soldiers who died in the conflict in 1982
May 1 – Día de los Trabajadores Day of the Workers
May 25 – Día de la Patria Day of the Patria (commemorates the Revolution of 1810)
June 20 – Día de la Bandera Day of the Flag (commemorates the death of General Belgrano, creator of the national flag)
July 9 – Día de la Independencia - Independence Day celebrates independence from Spain
August 17 - Día de San Martin San Martin's Day (commemorates the death of General San Martin, liberator of South America)
September 21 – Día de la primavera Spring Day
October 12 – Día de la Raza Columbus Day (commemorates Columbus' discovery of America in 1492)
November 10 – Día de la Tradición Day of the Traditions
December 25 – La navidad Christmas Day
Las Pascuas – Easter or Semana Santa – Holy Week changes its date from year to year
Important Dates in Patagonia
March 1 – St. David's Day (when the Welsh throughout the world commemorate the death of their patron saint Dewi in 589 A.D) . Celebrated throughout the colony and in Buenos Aires.
April 30 – Anniversary of the plebiscito in 1902, the vote which stated that the Cwm Hyfryd region would remain part of Argentina and not be given over to Chile. Ceremony in Escuela 18 Trevelin.
May – Eisteddfod in Trevelin
June – Eisteddfod Mini-Bethel, Gaiman
July – Eisteddfod in Porth Madryn
July 28 – Gwyl y Glaniad – marks the day when the first Welsh landed on the beach at Porth Madryn, celebrated in the Welsh towns and villages. Celebrations in various centres thoughout the colony.
September– Youth Eisteddfod, Gaiman – you have to be under 25 years old to compete in competitions in Welsh and Spanish
October– Eisteddfod del Chubut, Trelew – a chance for the people of the Chubut Valley and from the Andes to compete against each other in a variety of competitions both in Spanish and Welsh – from tango dancing to recitation, from Welsh folk dancing to Argentine folk music.
